I underst~cl that you are interest~ in Ioceting voids below the concrete slabs (estimated at I 0-inchss thick) over an area about 83,000 square feet in size. I have been using ~he GPR quite a bit lately in cietec~ng air-tilled voids directly below ~ncrete sl~bs because of last year's ea~hqu~ke (Boeing Field, McChord Airforoe Base and numerous roac~wys). The GPR has been very sucoeseful at detedJng shallow voids. P[ease note that anometies in the dat~ may also be c~use~ by other features which have a similar GPR anomaly ss vokJs (suc~h as logs, boulders, and clay lenses). You h~ve requested that GPR ciat~ be obtained along tr~nsect, s spaced 4 feet af:~rt- The GPR provides information clirec~ below the t~nsducer, so this spedng may not detect voids smaller ~an 4 feet in aeaal ex~ent. If time allows, additJona[ transoms will he run in areas v~th known d~mage anct/or areas with anomalous GPR ci.~ta that we observe in the tie!ci reco~s. Base~ on similar projects, the main item of contra for these types of pmbtems is concrete ovedying an air-fii~J void. Therefore, the GPR cJat~ will be g~t~ered using a high-,~quency (~0 ~Hz) ~n~ucer to provide the resolution required for dete~ng voids directiy below the concrete slab. A~though the ~00 ~Hz tmn~ucer provides high resolution, its depth penetration is usually limited to a few feet or less. Initial fieid activities will include establishing reference I:~seJine~ marked ~t 10-foot intervals over the are~ using t~pe measures a~ spray p~int The~e b~selines ~11 allow me~o aca~teiy loc~te the survey linss~ and will provkle a reference for future Limited confimation drilling using a 1-inch diameter rotohammer is recommencle~ to confirm the field interpretation of shallow ~icis. Dri~ng will stop once the concrete has been penet~ted, and the thickness of any voids will be probed ar~ messured. The holes ~il be ~eady mark~ and will be filled ~ Quikrete. I have planned on about 4 hours for field work for the drJIling which should allow for completion of ~bout 18 drfllholes. The following paces and mett~JoJog~ assumes that we wiJl h~ve ~e~r access to the surface (no obstructions, equipment etc.)~th no delays, and one field he!per ~11 be provided by the City of Bremerton to assist in establishing the reference baselines an~ to be present for hea~ and safe~ issues as the work will be perform~ on the sloping slabs. The ~te of progress in the field has been estimate~ conservat~el¥ at 1000 linear feet of GPR ~nse~ per hour, and assumes that the sl~bs c~n be on. If the slabs are so slipbe~/as to prchibit walking, a system using ropes will need to be rigged so that the GPR antenna c~n be pulled up and ctown each slab[ perpendicular transects may be more difficult to perform. Rates of progress on a slippery surface are dKrficu~ to estimate now, but should be close to the 1000 ~f/hr. estimate. A few h~rs work ~t the site '~il provide a ~earer i~ea of the difficulties the site presents and the rme of progress. PBn.n~ H. The use of ground penetha'dng radar t~picaliy provides good information on the location of voids and other buried objects. However, because of the numerous variables involved in any geophysical inves§gation, there is a possibility that some subsurface features may not be detected. Additionally, small voids (perhaps less than 1-inch thick) may not be detected. As with any geophysical method, only direct observations using borings or or,her means can ultimately characterize subsurface cond~ons, using the geophysical results as a guide. Please feel free to contact me ,--'t (425) 882-2634 or cell phone (425) 765-6316 if you have any questions or comments regarding the proposed scope of work. I look forward to helping you on this very interesting project_ Resp,e~'f~ly submitted, Philip FI. Duoos Geophysical Consultant Attachment GROUND PENETRATING RADAR Sorr~ of the uses of GPR include Ioceting buried tanks and dn~ms, delineating boundaries of landfills and t~enches, and defining voids and geologic stratigraphy. AJthough other tednniques can also provide this information, GPR is less affected by cultural interferences such as overhead powedines, buildings, and fences. GPR can also provide higherresolution of the target in many cases. The antenna can e~er be moved menuatly by an operator or towed by a vehicle. Depths of exploration can vary widely, from less than a few feet i~ water-saturated clayey materials to hundreds of feet in gladal ice. A vadet7 of antennas (ranging from 15 MHz to 2 GHz) can be used depending on subsurface conditions and the objective of the survey. Res~lutid~ of shallow objects requires higher frequencies, while lower frequencies work better for deeper investigations. The profile recorder supplies the power and synchronizing signals to the antenna. The antenna outputs a pulse of elect~'omagnetic energy to the ground. The energy pulse is reflected by geologic layers or objects under the surface back to the antenna. The antenna converts the pulse (nanoseconds in duration) to an analog signal (tens of milliseconds in duration) back to the radar unit. The signal is then pro~ and sent to a graphic recorder whic!n creates a continuous profile of the subsurface reflectors. Several factors can affect, the effectiveness of the GPR method including reinforced concrete at the surface, the presence of highiy conductive materials (such as clays and water), the size, depth, and physical property of the target and; in strafigraphic investigations, U~e conductMty contrast between ~l,airJgraphic units. The presence of numerous buried objects may mask objects and/or sh,~lJgraphy below. 7 GEOPHYSICAL CONSLrLTa, NT ,) ,~!?;~!!i ~,. ~11 I have over 16 years of experience, a_nd have been providing geophysical services exclusively for the en,Aronmental and eno~neering community since I earned my de~ee in Geophysical Engineering fi.om the Colorado School of Mines. Change of conditions re: .Drain kine Information Description: - Upon closer review of the existing outlet at reservoir bottom, it appears that the 16" pipe to have approximately 12" of cover and to be 24"-26" deep (invert). This represents a difference in the relationship between the reservoir fl6or bottom and t~nnel bottom, as represented on page C-3. This change in conditlon!will require modification of the outlet drain detail, elevation of pipe beneath the reservoir floor, excavation of pipe within the tunnel and possible footing modifications. Due to the severity of tkis issue and how it affects our schedule, a timely response would be ap~rec~a=ed~to minimize further disruption o~ work in progress. This change will result in a time extension and that amount can be determined cnce the extent of the modification is established. DistdbutJon: 1. Contrac~r Pa~e , of 2. Inspector 3. The contract time to corrkolete plays an integral part in the projected mark-up. When project delays occur, especially one of this length, a portion of the indirect and overhead costs are then direct costs specific to the project. Just as delays cost the Owner hence, 'liquidated damages', delays also cost the Contractm' and deplete profit. Builders Risk - $500.00 X .15 = $575.00 This portion of the additional premium is specifically for the delay time extension through 12-2-02. The additional costs through January are covered in the Change Order as specified by project specifications. General Liability Insurance (Oct. through Dec.)- $1,947.75 X. 15 = $2,239.91 Our premiums are based on '~N'ork In Progress", had this project been completed as originally agreed there would be no extension. However, due to the delay the extension will now be assessed at $649.25 per month until completion. Administrative and Management Cost -$5,000.35 X .20 = $6,000.42 During the delay there were administrative and management duties performed that were directly related to the project. Administrative $21.83 X 125 hrs. = $2,728.75 Management $37.86 X 60 hrs. = $2,271.60 Total Cost Incurred Due to Delay $8,991 ($8,81533 X. 02) RECEIVED NOV I t~ 2002 ,/~c//~¢,,t,,' ~ ENGINEERING D{V}StOt,~ ...--- Psg~ l of I OY .Cit___~y o_~f Bremerton Volume 1 - Specifications Reservoir No. 4 Modifications February 2002 SECTION 00500- AGREEMENT THIS AGREEMENT is dated the ~'-0 ~ day of r~ ¢{J~(..~o in the year 20 O ~_~ by and between Oity of Bremerton (hereinafter called OWNER) and (hereinafter called CONTRACTOR).
