SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 3 GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS This appliance must be grounded. In the event of malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a part of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This appliance is equipped with a cord having an equipment -grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with local codes and ordinances. DANGER — Improper connection of the equipment -grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipment -grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment -grounding conductor to a live terminal. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the appliance is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance — if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. This appliance is for use on a nominal 120 V circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated in Figure 1. A temporary adaptor, which looks like the adaptor illustrated in Figures 2 & 3, may be used to connect this plug to a 2 -pole receptacle as shown in Figure 3 if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adaptor should be used only until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. System Requirements Plumbing '/i" cold water supply with 3/8" NPTF adapter. Electrical 120V 6011z 20A single gang outlet; Outlet must be located within 5 feet of compressor unit. Maximum of two compressors units per 20A circuit. System Specifications Compressor assembly Height — 6.8" Width — 13.5" Depth — 13.5" Timer control enclosure Height — 5" Width — 9" Depth — 2.5" Dual filter assembly Height — 14" Width — 14" Depth — 5" Electrical (per compressor unit) Volts: Il5v Amps: 5.9 Hz: 60 5 System Overview Corrigan's VaporPlus Humidity system is designed to create a fog -like vapor in a service display case. Mixing compressed air and water in a special atomizing nozzle does this. Water pressure, spray pattern and nozzle direction can be adjusted for optimum vapor throughout the case. For more fine-tuning, the VaporPlus is operated by an adjustable timer. This manual will direct the qualified installer on safety guidelines, installation, maintenance and operation. The end user will find information on safety, operation and adjustments. Thank you for purchasing the VaporPlus Humidification system. IMPORTANT WATER FREEZES AT 32°F. IF THE CASE TEMPEATURE BY THE NOZZLE IS 32°F, THE WATER INSIDE NOZZLE AND WATER LINE TO NOZZLE WILL FREEZE. MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO HAVE THE PROPER CASE TEMPEATURE FOR THIS SYSTEM — 33°F DEGREES AND ABOVEI n Installation The location of the Vaporplus nozzle(s) is the most important step in the installation. Vapor coverage depends on how the case is going to be set up. If at some point there is a plexi -glass divider, this will substantially inhibit the flow of the vapor throughout the entire case run. Performance of the VaporPlus system depends greatly on the location of the nozzle(s) relative to the pans, product racks and fans (if applicable). Refer to figures 4 through 8 for guidelines on nozzle placement. Not recommended Figure 4 shows the nozzle under the bottom pan of the case near the intake of the evaporator fans. The fans are likely to draw the entire vapor in, preventing travel throughout the length of the case. The vapor is degraded as it passes through the fans and evaporator, resulting in minimal performance. Acceptable Figure 5 shows the bottom pan elevated with a gap in the back and the nozzle underneath. More vapor r " J is allowed to travel above through the gap, but a \ considerable amount may still be drawn into the fans. Product rack and nozzle adjustment will help improve performance. Fig. 5 Best Figure 6 shows the nozzle located above the bottom pan and below a separate product rack. This helps prevent the vapor from being affected by the evaporator fans. The product racks should form gaps for the vapor to travel up above. Product rack and nozzle adjustment will provide the best performance. 7 Fi, Gravity coil case Gravity coil cases will provide the least resistance to the travel of the vapor. Figure 7 shows the proper nozzle location. It is very important that there are gaps either in the back or front of the product racks to allow vapor travel above the product. Minor rack and nozzle adjustment will provide the best performance. Case with ice bed* (seafood only) Some cases may have an ice bed that prevents any vapor below the rack from traveling above. Figure 8 shows the nozzle mounted above the product. This setup is only acceptable for seafood product. See page 14 for additional steps on this type of installation. *Nozzles located above the product are acceptable Fiq. 8 in this type of installation only. Nozzles must be below the product in all other installations to prevent saturation of non -seafood products. Mounting Nozzle Fig. .9 L r Nozzle(s) is located at ether end of the case, preferably near a mechanical access where the air and water lines can be brought into the case. Nozzle be must mounted on a sturdy part of the case as far L— away from any refrigeration lines as possible. 0---- Mount nozzle with two '/4" stainless steel self- II tapping mounting screws as shown in figure 9. 0 Compressor Assembly Placement Locate an area underneath the service case that will accommodate the compressor assembly size and serviceability. Do not place compressor assembly on top of any refrigeration lines, water lines etc; the compressor assembly should be placed on the floor. If the electric is already in place, the compressor should be located within 5ft of the outlet. Try to locate compressor assembly under the case being humidified. See figure 10. Before placing compressor unit under case, fasten the three 24v wires from timer control to the terminal block inside compressor assembly enclosure (see dwgs A-1214 & A-1215). This is easier to do when compressor assembly is outside of case. Attach wires to the corresponding colors on the terminal block. Place compressor assembly under case and make sure it is not up against any other objects. Make sure the pressure gauges on unit are facing out for ease of installation and service. Timer placement The timer enclosure is to be mounted on the back of the service case. It should be mounted in a location where it won't be damaged by carts or hit by people. Under a scale shelf or a folding shelf is a desirable location. Mount enclosure using four -/d' stainless steel self -tapping screws. See figure 11. ft. 11 R] Filtration placement Filters are to be mounted on the back of the service case. Keep in mind the same guidelines as with the timer when determining the location for the filters. Typically they can located beside the timer enclosure. Use the same screws to mount the filters. From left to right, make sure the blue KDF filter is in the first sump and the white sediment filter is in the second. See figure 12. \ W Fiq.12 I Blue KDF Filter Final hookups White Sediment Filter ➢ Refer to the attached drawings when performing the final hookups. Starting with the water supply. Fasten the provided 3/8" tube x 3/8" male pipe connector to the female adapter on the cold water supply (figure 13). Run 3/8" tubing from the fitting on the cold water supply to the inlet valve (valve with blue handle) on the filter assembly (figure 14). Use elbow fittings to ease tubing connections. Fig. 13 I 10 Fig. 14 ➢ From the outlet of the filter assembly (figure 15), run 3/8" tubing to the water inlet on the compressor assembly (figure 16). The primary water hookup is complete. Do not turn the water on at this time. Use elbow fittings to ease tubing connections. i Fig. 15 I I II W ➢ An access opening through the case is needed to run the air and water lines from the compressor unit to the nozzle. Most case designs offer prefabricated areas to allow for mechanical piping. These may be an elevated section on the bottom of the case or a chase through the back of the case. Use these access points for installing the air and water lines to the nozzle. The nozzle should be located at the end of the case near an access point to keep the air and water lines inside the case to a maximum length of 2 ft. If needed, drill a ''/z" hole for each line brought into case. Caulk holes where air and water lines come into case with a silicone caulk (figure 17). 11 ccess ➢ From the '/4" water outlet on the compressor assembly (figure 18); run '/4" tubing to nozzle (figure 19). Make sure length of 1/4in tube is at least IOR, this is important to the operation of the system. For models VP2 & VPSL2, refer to drawings A-1281 & A-1282 for installation. A tee will be required to split the water tubing to two nozzles. , 1 J .- Fig. 19 ➢ From the 3/8in air outlet on the compressor assembly (figure 20), run 3/8in tubing into case, then to nozzle (figure 21). Make sure length of 3/8in tube is at least I Oft; this is important to the operation of the system. For models VP2 & VPSL2, refer to drawings A-1281 & A-1282 for installation. A tee will be required to split the air tubing to two nozzles. Inspect all the work performed up to this point and proceed to the start up section. Refer to drawing A-1226 for complete pluming diagram. 12 Start up Water PSI Adjustment Fig. 22 ➢ Flush Filters: Turn blue handle valve to the off position and turn on water supply to filters; check for leaks. Disconnect the line out of the filters. Attach a 3/8 -tube section to the filter outlet and run to a 5 gal. bucket. Turn on blue handle valve and let water flush to bucket until full. Shut off water and reattach original 3/8" tubing to filter outlet. Turn blue handle back on and check for leaks from filter to inlet of compressor assembly. ➢ Flush Air & Water Lines: Disconnect the air and water lines to the nozzles. Make sure toggle switch on timer enclosure is in the off position. Plug the power cord in to outlet. Turn timer knob to the 10 -min. setting. Turn on toggle switch and let run. Water should be coming out of the ''/<" line at nozzles, and air should be coming out of 3/8" line to nozzles. Let system run for 5 minutes to flush any debris from lines. After 5 minutes, turn system off and re -attach air and water lines to nozzles. M ➢ Turn system back on. Nozzle should start to create a vapor spray pattern. Make sure the air pressure gauge reads 30 psi (+/- 2psi). Using the water pressure regulator, adjust water pressure between 2 and 5 psi. ➢ Turning the knob with slot on top of regulator performs regulator adjustment. Turn knob clockwise to increase pressure and counter -clockwise to decrease pressure. After water pressure is at desired setting, tighten adjustment -locking ring (figure 22). ➢ Spray pattern can be adjusted by turning outside tip with deflector in and out (Figure 23). ➢ With all the racks in place inside case, adjust the direction and spray pattern of the nozzle for best distribution throughout case. Minor rack or pan adjustment may be necessary for best performance. 13 Operation ➢ Set the time adjustment knob so the system comes on for about one minute. To determine the best time cycle, the case needs to set up with product and in normal operation. It is essentially up to the people who work with the case to decide the best time cycle. If the product is too dry, keep increasing the timer knob incrementally and let run for a few hours in between each adjustment. When desired condition of product is obtained, no more adjustment is needed. If the product seems too wet, follow the same procedure but decrease the timer knob instead. The system will stay off for about five minutes between each cycle. ➢ Adjusting the off time should be performed by a qualified service person. To adjust the off time, remove the timer enclosure cover and adjust blue knob on timer body (figure 24). The off time range is 5 to 15 min. Additional Steps for Nozzle Above Seafood Product If nozzle is mounted above the seafood product, an anti -drip device and a flow restrictor must be installed: The anti -drip will prevent excess water from spraying on the product during start-up and shutdown of each cycle. The flow restrictor will prevent vapor from saturating the product. For installation, refer to drawing numbers A-1278 and A-1231. Typically these components are already installed at the factory. Installing VaporPlus Secondary Unit and Nozzle* Adding a secondary unit will increase the capability of the VaporPlus system while still being operated by one timer control. The steps are the same for installing the secondary unit except for the 24V control wiring and the 3/8" water supply. Both compressor units will use the same water supply via a 3/8" tee. Refer to the wiring and plumbing schematics for installing the VaporPlus secondary unit. *If product humidified with secondary nozzle is different than product humidified with the primary nozzle, a separate system with timer should be used. This will allow different timer adjustment for different product. 14 Fig. 24 If nozzle is mounted above the seafood product, an anti -drip device and a flow restrictor must be installed: The anti -drip will prevent excess water from spraying on the product during start-up and shutdown of each cycle. The flow restrictor will prevent vapor from saturating the product. For installation, refer to drawing numbers A-1278 and A-1231. Typically these components are already installed at the factory. Water filters — P/N's: FCRB110 & FCKDF10. Water filters should be changed every six months. Filters include a I -micron sediment filter and a KDF media filter. The KDF filter is installed in the left sump and the sediment in the right. To change filters, remove and discard old filters, wash sumps with soap and water then rinse. Fill each sump with water and two capfuls of bleach and let sit for 20 minutes. Dump out bleach water and rinse thoroughly. Install new filters and flush to drain for 5 minutes before returning to service. Air filter — P/N: ACMC. Air filter should be changed Fig. 25 every four to six months depending on use. To change Element filter, turn black cover a'''A tum CCW; remove old filter and discard. Clean cover with warm soapy water, rinse O and dry. Install new element and reinstall cover (Figure o 25). Note - Maintenance on nozzles can be done by anyone who works in the department. Water and air filters should be changed by a qualified service person. Filters can be ordered through Corrigan Corporation at 800-462-6478. 15 Trouble shooting System won't run when turned on: ➢ Check power supply and make sure system is plugged in. ➢ Receptacle voltage may be incorrect. ➢ System could be in off cycle. Wait ten minutes for system to come on. ➢ Nozzle may be frozen. Case temp may need adjustment. ➢ Water pressure may be set too high. ➢ Check 24V wire connections. System is running but not spraying: ➢ Make sure water supply is on. ➢ Check water pressure adjustment. ➢ Check for debris in water line to nozzle and in nozzle. ➢ Check for ice buildup on nozzle. This enclosure significantly reduces the installation cost, while improving quality and cleanliness for many food cooling applications in the supermarket & food processing industries. UNEXCELLED ENERGY EFFICIENCY Howe's Rapid Freeze Flaker utilizes an innovative extended surface evaporator design and unique material combination to offer significantly superior heat transfer characteristics over most ice machines in the industry. As a proven innovator for over 50 years, Howe brings a distinctive blend of technology and engineering expertise to enable Howe Flakers to operate at considerably lower cost than popular granular style flake ice machines. REMARKABLE LONGEVITY The rugged 'Open Style' Rapid Freeze evaporator design allows ice to be harvested by gravity, avoiding the punishing bearing loads that granular style flakers experience during harvest by an extrusion process. Howe's approximate 50% lighter bearing load enables Rapid Freeze Flake Ice Machines to frequently last three to four times longer than competitive machines. EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY ICE Rapid Freeze units produce the °Authentic° 100% dry, sub -cooled flake ice that contains approximately four (4) times more surface area than many competitive flake ice machines. When compared to granular style flake ice machines whose production is only partially frozen (between 65% and 70% ice quality), Howe Flake Ice offers significantly greater cooling capacity, and lasts up to 20% longer. RELIABLE ICE PRODUCTION CAPACITY Howe Rapid Freeze Flake Ice Machines are some of the only flakers which voluntarily base model numbers on daily capacities using ARI conditions of 70OF water and 90OF air temperatures (21oC/ 320C), de -rated for 100% ice. Compared to comparable model granular style flake ice machines, it is not uncommon for Howe Flakers to produce approximately twice as much ice as competitive units at ARI conditions. REMARKABLE LONGEVITY The rugged 'Open Style" Rapid Freeze evaporator design allows ice to be harvested by gravity, avoiding the punishing bearing loads that granular style flakers experience during harvest by an extrusion process. Howe's approximate 50% lighter bearing load enables Rapid Freeze Flake Ice Machines to frequently last three to four times longer than competitive machines. EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY ICE Rapid Freeze units produce the °Authentic° 100% dry, sub -cooled flake ice that contains approximately four (4) times more surface area than many competitive flake ice machines. When compared to granular style flake ice machines whose production is only partially frozen (between 65% and 70'/o ice quality), Howe Flake Ice offers significantly greater cooling capacity, and lasts up to 200/6 longer. RELIABLE ICE PRODUCTION CAPACITY Howe Rapid Freeze Flake Ice Machines are some of the only flakers which voluntarily base model numbers on daily capacities using ARI conditions of 70OF water and 90OF air temperatures (21 oC/ 320C), de -rated for 100% ice. Compared to comparable model granular style flake ice machines, it is not uncommon for Howe Flakers to produce approximately twice as much ice as competitive units at ARI conditions.
