From Cindy Caldwell to Everyone: 06:57 PM CindyC@KMHS.org Airen has a few additional items for tonight's New Business: . (1) meaningful recruitment for our recent vacancies on this REAC . (2) advising Bremerton City Council and Mayor to join Government Alliance on Race and Equity . (3) heads-up of a possible invitation (coming from Poulsbo City Council) for us to tell them of our experience getting a REAC started, how it is going, etc. . (4) email from Robert Boddie about how we will address the fact that the City of Bremerton has so far (in 2021) had zero Black applicants for positions (5) the request received from Stanley W. Hess, Museum Curator, Valentinetti Puppet Museum What is "GARE" and why should we care? ** GARE = Government Alliance on Race and Equity, a national network of local and regional jurisdictions working to achieve racial equity and advance opportunities for all - racialequityalliance.org ** As of fall 2021, Kitsap County and City of Bainbridge Island have already joined GARE. If our other local governments join, we will be well positioned to benefit from GARE’s strategy of balancing the specific needs of each jurisdiction with a strong collaboration across them all, to share resources and maximize impact. ** The programs and relationships of GARE can help local electeds to identify and interrupt implicit bias and systemic racism. ** GARE has a low $1,000 annual membership for any jurisdiction with fewer than 1,000 employees. 350 jurisdictions have already joined! ** Let's call on Bremerton City government to budget the money and time for GARE in 2022. From Erin Burrows to Everyone: 07:03 PM We additionally need to discuss whether we will bring a budget proposal to Bremerton City Council - could be related to this conversation about GARE fees The City of Poulsbo will be joining GARE using the mayor’s discretionary budget for the time being, but it could go into our budget eventually. Thank you, Darryl. From Melissa Watkinson to Everyone: 07:16 PM Can it be recommended to the mayor for opening a DEI management position within HR? RECEIVED THIS REQUEST from Stanley W. Hess, Museum Curator, Valentinetti Puppet Museum, wanting to know about "other institutional and publications similar to the JIM CROW MUSEUM that relate to other race and cultural discrimination practices in our culture (English, please), that we can use to focus on presenting our collections in a respectful way" . Living Arts Cultural Heritage Project (LACH) Director Akuyea Karen Vargas karendvargas@gmail.com . Suquamish Museum Director Janet Smoak 360-394-8495 jsmoak@suquamish.nsn.us . Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience (Seattle) Collections 206.623.5124 ext. 117 collections@wingluke.org Exhibits 206.623.5124 ext. 124 exhibits@wingluke.org . Frye Museum From Erin Burrows to Everyone: 07:21 PM Tacoma Art Museum, Particularly the Kinsey Collection: https://www.tacomaartmuseum.org/explore/the-kinsey-collection/ There used to be an online museum with Kitsap African American history, including some audio history. I do not remember what it was called, though. Here is a document from GARE that touches on equity in hiring (scroll to page 9 for focus on public sector jobs). I have worked with Kitsap County on getting them to join GARE and we look forward to moving forward with implementing staff training and more fully utilizing the awesome GARE resources. https://racialequityalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Public-Sector-Jobs-Final1.pdf GARE Racial Equity Toolkit https://racialequityalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/GARE-Racial_Equity_Toolkit.pdf Seems like that kind of forum would be great if the tables turned, and BIPOC folks were speaking about their needs From Erin Burrows to Everyone: 07:42 PM I agree, Melissa - the forums so far have been more about distribution of current programs rather than hearing from BIPOC business owners here is the black-owned business directory that Faye pulled together: https://www.experiencekitsap.com/newsboard/black-owned-businesses-serving-kitsap From Rebecca Pirtle to Everyone: 07:46 PM They are working on an indigenous people-owned business directory as well. From Sarah van Gelder to Everyone: 07:46 PM Cool! REMINDER OF SOME GROUP AGREEMENTS WE ESTABLISHED BACK IN MARCH: ** Flexibility: balance between more structure (hand raising) and flow. ** Mindful of each other’s body language, coming off mute, etc. ** Speak up if you’d like us to call attention to our process. ** Someone will monitor the chat and hand-raising emoji. ** If you’ve already spoken/contributed on something, hang back a bit to allow others to contribute before you do again. ** Speak your truth. ** Expect and accept non-closure. ** How will we hold ourselves accountable to these group agreements?
