SUMMARY: The Bremerton Municipal Court would like to apply for 3 grant opportunities.
The first two (2) grants are with the WA Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC):
1) Court Backlog Reduction and Audio/Visual Enhancements: This grant would provide funds to
assist in improving audio/visual systems in the courtrooms and the backlog reduction grant would
provide funds to assist in paying for Pro Tem Judges and other expenses necessary to reduce
the backlog created by the COVID pandemic. No matching funds are required for this grant.
These funds are available for use from 7-1-2022 until 6-30-2023.
2) Therapeutic Courts and Community Justice Counselors: This grant would provide funding to
assist in establishing a Therapeutic Court, as well as provide funding for community justice
partners. No matching funds are required for this grant. These funds are available for use from
7-1-2022 until 6-30-2023.
3) The third grant is with the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) for the
Community Courts Initiative Program: This grant opportunity is a much more significant grant
and does require the City to commit to matching funds in the amount of$200,000 (this is 25% of
the grant if a full grant of$600,000 is awarded). This grant award covers a 48-month period. The
break down is essentially for a $50,000 a year investment, the City would receive $150,000 a
year in grant funds for 4 years. Also included is a Memorandum of Understanding that is
required to be executed to apply for this grant.
ATTACHMENTS: Blank Grant Applications and Memorandum of Understanding
FISCAL IMPACTS (Include Budgeted Amount): The BJA grant would require the City to commit to a
match of 25% of the total cost of the program. This is anticipated to be approximately $50,000 a year for 4
years. The AOC grants do not require any matching funds so there would be no impact to the budget.
