Higher ceilings can adversely affect detection time. In some instances, earlier detection maybe obtained by reducing dtc spacing between detectors.`,Seoithe latest edition of the NFPA 72E, Automatic Fire Detectors. NOTE C -Maximum distance shown is from any wall partition or ceiling projection extending -down more than 12 inches. - WARNINGS, continued " 'vice does not contain abuilt-in signal: Alarm signals can only be t ;d by interconnection with separately installed signaling devices. 3. DANGER -This device will not operate without electrical power and fires often'cause cutoffs of electrical power. This device does not contain a battery -backup power sunoly• If the electrical circuit feeding the device is cut, or.is not providing power for any reason, this device will not detect heat or provide any warning of a possible fire,. nor will it provide any warning that it is not functioning. 4. ;DANGER -The rate -of --rise feature on the Heat Detector is subject to failure over time. The rate -of --rise feature should be tested by a qualified fire protection specialist annually to ensure that it is in working order. A plastic shield, part number P-847567-0017, is available to protect the fixed temper- ature element of the 281E and 282B series heat detectors during rate -of --rise testing. 'The testing procedure for the rate -of -rise feature is specified in the "Maintenance and Testing" section of instruction sheet P-847550-0820 sup- plied with this device. If a fire protection specialist is not available. to con- ductthis testing procedure, you should contact your Edwards representative to arrange to have these important tests performed. y .,,.,t..,,,> :; ,. WARNINGS .. 1. This device does not protect life against fire and smoke. Inmost fires, hazardotis levels of smoke, heat and toxic gases can build up before a iieak detector would operate. Independent studies: indicate that heat detectors should only be used when property protection' alone: is involved:, Incases where life sa%yt is n facet`, life rise of smokd detectors is recturtznerrtled.. `` . ",. ".: Tt%e intended use of this Heat Detector is to proms de one sourclr tf rnforma;' lion that is supplemental to'smoke detection to rnerease the probability that an early wanting will be provided so that property can be safeguarded. Heat detectors do not always detect fires because the fire may be a sloe✓ molder- ing low heat type (producing smoke) or because they may not be near where. the fine occurs, or because the heat of the fire may bypass them. This deter- for will -not detect oxygen levels, smoke, toxic gases, or flames. According- ly, this device should only be used as a part of a broadly based program of; fire safety which would include a variety of sources of information on heat: and smoke levels, visual sighting of the fire, extinguishment systems, and other safety measures. . If they are spaced in accordance with the directions in the."Specifications Table" they can contribute, within an overall fire safety program, to reduc- ing the risk of avoidable property losses. Under no circumstances should these devices be relied on as the sole measure to ensure fire safety. DanLer will result if these devices are relied on to any degree for the protection of human life. • : • EDWARDS' i , .. . .. 1 ' (NOT A LIFE SAFETY DEVICE -USE FOR PROPERTY PROTECTION ONLY) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS SUPPLIED (P-847S50-0820) BEFORE INSTALLING THIS DEVICE ©Copyright 1988 Edwards Company, Inc., 195 Farmington Avenue, Farnungton, CT 06032 " APPLICANT: OWNER CONTRACTOR OTHER: SITE ADDRESS: U m [L ST OWNER: $H2D FA►n LY L7 • ►t2nlCtz_sN t r CONTRAC70R: N C`,e Tt-f W L .sT S E c: U 2t 7Y r spc.RsrS 1Nc. ,'. STEWART COMMISSIONER - '' Of FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING Ll LEGAL DEPARTMENT September 8, 1977 OP: TO: Building Department FROM: City Attorney SUBJ: Handicap Regulations for Terhune and Assoc. FREDS. SCHONEMAN COMMISSIONER Of PUBLIC WORKS AND UTILITIES G. C. YEADON, SR. CITY CLERK AND PURCHASING AGENT Handicap regulations The Regulations for Barrier -Free Facilities are controlling as of October 1, 1976. Secton 003(4) specifically excepts buildings or facilities for which contracts for the planning or design have been avaarded prior to October 1, 1976, from these new regulations. If, in fact, the contract for the design of this apartment complex was made in 1974, the exemption would apply. There are several other considerations which should be made. Even if the plans for a building were developed in 1974, if it was not specifically decided that these plans would be used for a particular building prior to October 1, 1976, the handicap regulations should apply. For example, if a contractor hired an architect to design five buildings in 1974, and one of the buildings was not started until 1977, the regulations would not apply. Here the plans for a specific building were contracted for prior to the date the law was to be enforced. This is different, however, from the case where a contractor, after October 1, 1976, picks a building plan that was drawn before that date. In this case, even though the plans were made before October 1, 1976, they were not contracted for before this date and therefore not exempt from the handicap regulations. Per- haps some evidence of the contract for the design of the building should be required so you can determine when the contractor actually decided to use those particular building plans. Whatever the date you determine was the date of contract for the building plans, all building regulations concerning handicap pro- visions that were applicable at that time should be enforced.
