In 2014 the City began converting the lights from HPS to Light Emitting Diode (LED) for improved energy efficiency. The conversion consisted of removing the ballast in the fixtures and installing replacement lamps. The City consulted with a vendor who recommended the replacement lamps to install. The new LED lamps installed were initially 24W LED (150W HID equivalent), and later upgraded at the intersections to 35W LED (175W HID equivalent). While the lumen output from the new lamps exceeds the lumen output from the HPS lamps that were replaced, the amount of light cast on the roadway was diminished due to the nature of how light from the new lamps reflects off the existing fixtures. Replacement of the fixtures is necessary to restore lighting to previous levels and is proposed to be completed over 5-years (78 in 2020, 50/year for 5 years). This initial purchase of 78 LED fixtures will restore lighting at all pedestrian crossings to levels that exceed the lighting from the original HPS lamps.
