DOWNTOWN BREMERTON/WATERFRONT REVITALIZATION TASK FORCE
March 12, 1996 - Meeting Minutes
Lou Weir ran the meeting this morning as Gary Gartin is out of town this week. He
asked Gussie Schaeffer from THE SUN to report on the "Image: Downtown Bremer-
ton" workshop and the survey forms that were mailed out. So far 180 survey forms
have been returned and they are still coming in, so they do not have a report on the
survey results yet. They are pleased with the return rate so far. The original expec-
tations for the workshop attendance were about 50-60, but over 137 people attended.
Lou said he was impressed with the workshop and thanked Gussie and THE SUN for
their sponsorship.
Bonnie McDade reported that the Missouri Committee is fine and they have not and
will not give up. They are disappointed with the legislature's inaction on the funding
as this tends to give the message that Washington State is not fully in support of the
Bremerton/Washington proposal. Earle Smith was in Washington D.C. last week and
continued lobbying with NAVSEA. Norm Dicks is still working for the proposal too.
Also, Earle Smith and Sherril Huff-Menees were interviewed lastnight onTV
regarding
the Missouri proposal and the interview did touch briefly on the Sinclair Landing Asso-
ciation project.
Mayor Horton is in Washington D.C. this week and will be taking part in a transit con-
ference. The City Council meeting last week focused on parking and the issue is still
in study session.
Main Street had another St. Patrick's Day committee meeting this week to plan final
details of the Banker's Irish Potato Race and parade to be held this Saturday, March
16th. Ronald McDonald should be there and they are inviting everyone to come and
be in the parade. Sunday, March 17th will be the St. Patrick's Day Dinner and Enter-
tainment from 6-8 p.m. at the Cloverleaf. Tickets are $15 and are available today.
Carol passed out flyers regarding all the events. Tim Ryan added that there's nothing
greater than having kids, parents and grandparents at the parade. He emphasized
there's no charge to attend or be in the parade.
Carol Atkinson also applauded the "Image: Downtown Bremerton" workshop and said
she hoped to have a big announcement for our group in a few weeks. Main Street is
working on the Olympic Torch Relay May 7th which will include schools, bands and
entertainment. Carol encouraged all to get involved. There will be a ceremony on the
Boardwalk before the relay gets on the ferry to Seattle.
Beverly Woods announced Sandra Howes will be her successor as Executive Director
of the Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce. Sandra will be on board March 26th
and Bev's last day will be March 29th. For those who don't know Sandra Howes, Bev
said she is also Earle Smith's wife. Bev is working on Showcase Bremerton, which
will be at the Bayview Best Western Thursday, March 21st from 5-8 p.m. For $25 a
table, a business can set up a display to promote their business and its services.

The Chamber Luncheon will be March 28th, also at the Bayview, and the speaker will
talk about networking and how to gain results from networking. Reservations can be
made through the Chamber office. The Armed Forces Day Pageant is May 17th and
the Armed Forces Day Parade will be May18th, 1996. Theyare workingon getting

P Yt. Lou Weir asked how the 4 P t e Chamber Luncheon
with Alice Tawresy as guest speaker was received, and Bev said she thought it was
an eye-opening meeting. The meeting is on tape and the Chamber will be doing
this for future meetings, also.
The Kitsap County Historical Museum's new manager, Catherine Borstad, is on
board and will be at the next Task Force meeting. There is no firm date yet for the
museum grand opening but they will try to have something ready for the Armed
Forces Day events. They have funding for the elevator in the building but still need to
raise funds for the improvements required for the stairwell and sprinkler system. Amy
Burnett has created a new poster for her gallery's 5th anniversary has donated 100
posters to the museum to be sold at $50 a piece. The proceeds will go to the muse-
um for exterior renovation of their building. All are welcome to attend the May 3rd re-
ception at Amy Bumett's gallery.
Tim Ryan reported for the Admiral Theater. Tim saw a video that Ray Shephardson
has and said it was great and very encouraging. No one really believes they are
going to get a theater package like those in the video. Also, Ray Shephardson was
featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal and the article was very compli-
mentary. Tim encouraged Task Force members to thank the Kitsap County Commis-
sioners and Bremerton City Council members for their support of the Admiral Theater
and tell them that support is appreciated. Tim stated the Admiral hopes to be up and
going next fall.
Ken Attebery, Director of Planning for the Port of Bremerton, came to the meeting to-
day and stressed that the Port continues to support the other downtown projects.
Fred Schoneman said Hilton Smith, the promoter of the new fast ferry system, is ask-
ing the Port for its support. Fred would like to hear any comments from our group and
mentioned that Hilton Smith will give a presentation today (3/12) at the Port's 4 p.m.
board meeting. If anyone would like to see his presentation, the Port board meetings
are open to the public.
Beverly Woods suggested we invite Hilton Smith to give a presentation about his fast
ferry proposal at our next meeting. Eric Anderson volunteered to ask him. Our group
needs to let the State Transportation Commission know we support better ferry service
from any source. Eric also volunteered to talk to anyone about the passenger ferries
and the various proposals. More legislative funding is needed for more than two fer-
ries. Both the state and Hilton Smith are talking about 35 minute commute times.
The Lions Club Pancake Breakfast will be Saturday, May 18th from 6:30 a.m. to noon.
They had 500-600 people attend last year and hope for continued support. Lou Weir
said the breakfast is one of the great social events of the year.

Bonnie McDade reminded the group that the '40's Dance' sponsored by the "Swing
City Committee" is Friday, March 15th from 8-12 p.m. at the Bremerton Eagles Hall.
Danny Ward & Reality will play. They are selling tickets now and expect about 100
people. Ticket prices are $15 singles/$25 couples and proceeds will go to the next
dance and downtown redevelopment. There will be prizes and people can dress in
40's costumes. Also, the "Swing City Committee" meets each Monday night at the
EDC office from 6-7:30 p.m. and all are welcome to participate.
Cindy Wyman volunteered to call Randy McGreal to ask if he or Mary McClure can
give a report on the Sinclair Landing project for our next meeting.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 26th at 9 a.m. at the Washington Mutual
meeting room.
Respectfully Submitted,
Cindy Wyman
