SUMMARY: In 2017, staff pulled another pump station WB -3 for repairs, pump #3, due to the failure
of the mechanical seal. At that time, the pump was found to have a plugged cooling water jacket
from grit entrained in the wastewater, which lead to the mechanical seal failure.
This style of pump is a sewage cooled pump, and we cannot control the amount of fine grit that we
receive at this station. Staff has devised a modification to the pump, so that we can utilize a closed
loop cooling system to keep failures that occurred in 2017 from happening in the future.
Pump #1 is the second of three pumps that will be modified, and it will extend the life of these pumps
by another 25 - 30 years. The cost for the repair and modification of pump #1 is $27,032.00, from
Granich Engineered Products Inc., who are the regional vendor and repair facility for Fairbanks
Morse Pumps.

RECOMMENDED MOTION: Move to approve the repair and modifications to the Fairbanks Morse
pump #1 by Granich Engineered Products, Inc. in the amount of $27,032.00 (includes tax), and
authorize the Mayor to finalize and execute the agreement with substantially the same terms and
conditions as presented.
