The city of Bremerton required engineering to ensure that the awning met the minimum UBC design requirements. The awning frame is to be made of 6063-T52 Aluminum with a canvas cover. Allowable stresses and design information for the aluminum are from the Aluminum design manual published by the Aluminum Association. The Awning frame is to be of welded construction. A finite element analysis of the structure was performed using Cadre Pro software. All welded joints are assumed to be fixed connections. The awning proposal as given by Rainier Industries using 1"xl"x .110" square tubing is inadequate for the required 25 psf snow load and 80 mph exposure B wind. The design will exceed the allowable stress in the aluminum members with approximately a 6 psf snow load and collapse with approximately a 12 psf snow load. Redesigned member sizes shall be a minimum as specified below #1. 1"xl" x .110 Alum tube #2. 1.75" x 1.75" x .120" Alum tube #3 1.75"x 1.75"x.120" Staple Extrusion #4 1.75" x 1.75" x.120" Staple Extrusion 45 1.75"x 1.75"x.120" Staple Extrusion #6 1.75" x 1.75" x.120" Staple Extrusion Connections to the building as shown on the Rainier Industries drawing are adequate.
