SUBJECT: Set the Annual Compensation Study Session Date: _August 9, 2017

SUMMARY: Pursuant to BMC 2.62.035(a), the Municipal Court Judge's salary is set by City Council
action. The City is authorized to receive Trial Court Improvement grant money if the Judge's salary
is set at 95% of the District Court Judge's Salary, effective September 1 of each year. That salary is
set, by law, by the Washington Citizen's Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials. We are
requesting to adjust the salary for the Judge to be effective September 1, 2017 to bring us into
compliance with the grant conditions and allow us to continue to receive grant funding.
Current salary $150,036.35, proposed new salary $153,037.40 as of September 1, 2017 and as of
September 1, 2018 it will be $156,097.35 (these amounts include deferred compensation).
ATTACHMENTS: Letter from the Administrative Office of the Courts regarding Salary Increase for
Judges for 2017 and 2018.
FISCAL IMPACTS (Include Budgeted Amount): For the 2017 budget cycle, the increase is $250.09
per month (total $1000.35). This amount was already factored into our 2017 budget. The 2018
amount will be included in our prepared budget later this year.

RECOMMENDED MOTION:
Move to set the annual compensation of the Municipal Court Judge at $153,037.40 (including
deferred compensation) effective September 1, 2017 and to set it at $156,097.35 effective
September 1, 2018 (including deferred compensation).
