Gundor Frykholm, Vern's father, and Carl Lundquist started a store next to the Scandia dock on Scandia Point. As a young lad, Vern, known as Bud, and the other young men, would dive from the roof of the warehouse on the dock, 25' into the water below. In 1916, Vern moved to Port Angeles with his father, mother and older sister, Lorraine, to start the Manitee grocery store on Francis Street. Vern was born September 6, 1916 and shortly thereafter the family moved back to Scandia where his father began to work at the newly established Keyport Torpedo Station. Over the years four more children were born, Ray, Shirley, Donna and Rodney. Vern remembers the Saturday night Polka dances at Finn Hall in Scandia, rowing to Poulsbo from Pierson point, playing four sports at North Kitsap High School and graduating in 1935. After graduation he helped Mr. Salmonson on Thorpe point to care for his 4,000 chickens. As a side business he raised his own chickens and on Saturday he would take his eggs and chickens and several local women and their produce to sell at Pikes Place Market. While at the market he got to know many of the vendors and eventually met the daughter of one of the vendors from Burien, Ethel, and they married in 1943. They had three children and were married for 72 years. Ethel passed away just over a year ago at the age of 92. Vern served in the US Army for 20 years and was in the Philippines and Korea. He retired in 1963, worked in the Civil Service for 12 years and retired again in 1976. Ethel and he traveled extensively and lived in Alaska, Kentucky, and Poulsbo. He now lives in Sequim close to his son, Vern Jr. At age 100 he is still active. He and a friend, Helen Brown, both 100 danced New Years night away, well, until 8.30 pm and then only a few dances, but a great way to bring in the New year of 2017. He had 7 birthday parties, went on a family birthday cruise to Alaska, and was honored at the 9/6/2016 Mariners baseball. The Mariner's facebook video of that event went viral and it has gotten over 250,000 views and counting. He commented last month that "If I knew turning 100 would be this much fun, I would have done it earlier." Vern wishes you a very happy new year and that you have as happy a life as he and his Ethel had.
