SUMMARY: Pump No.3 (Fairbanks Morse model 10") at pump station WB -3, experienced a failure
to its mechanical seal and was pulled by staff for repairs. Once the pump was dismantled at the
factory repair shop, the pump's cooling water jacket was found to be plugged with grit, which led to
the mechanical seal failure. The cost for the repair of this pump is $25,854.30 from Granich
Engineered Products Inc.
This style of pump is a sewage cooled pump, and we cannot control the amount of fine grit that we
receive at this station which led to this pump failure. Staff has devised a modification to the pump so
that we can utilize a closed loop cooling system to keep this failure from occurring in the future. This
will be the first of the three pumps that will be repaired and modified, and will extend the life of these
pumps by another 25 — 30 years.
