CITY OF BREMERTON
CITY COUNCIL
SUBJECT: Resolution No. 3244 changing Study Session Date: March 25, 2015
the name of East Park Nature Area to COUNCIL MEETING Date: April 1, 2015
Madrona Trails Department: Parks and Recreation
Presenter: Wyn Birkenthal
Phone: (360) 473-5752
SUMMARY: The East Park Nature Area is a 15.4-acre forested area lying east of the Harrison
Medical Center and west of the Bremerton Family YMCA. The parcel derived its name from "East
Park Navy Defense Housing Area,"the Federal Government's title for the property prior to the City
acquiring it for recreational purposes in 1969.
The 2014 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan recommends expansion of the trail system and a
trail connection to adjacent residential development, along with installation of entry signage. Prior to
fabricating signs, a name change to "Madrona Trails" is proposed to better promote the forested
area's unique prevalence of madrona trees. The name change would make it easier for citizens to
identify the name with the area's primary feature and prevent confusion with East Park, a developed
City park located east of the natural area.
The name change to Madrona Trails was recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission
on February 24`h, 2015.
