LETTER TO THE CITY COUNCIL
Think about The Admiral Theatre for a moment. Think about the landmark that
spans generations, reaches from its historical beginnings into the present revival of
downtown Bremerton. The Admiral Theatre stands today as one of the city's
proudest accomplishments, a true blend of what civic, business, and government
vision can accomplish.
Today The Admiral Theatre represents the embodiment of its mission as an
organization:
Bremerton's historic Admiral Theatre is a 1942 movie house. Renovated
in 1997 into Kitsap County's premier live entertainment and events
venue, our mission is to enrich the lives of local communities through
arts, cultural education and entertainment.
It has been an achievement of the City of Bremerton and the city's leadership to
bring this all about. The support of the city, beginning with the original 50-year
lease of the theatre to the Admiral Theatre Foundation, plus the ongoing support of
Lodging Tax funds laid the groundwork necessary for the theatre to flourish. Here is
how we have prospered:
The Premier Arts Venue in the West Sound. The Admiral has gained a
well-deserved reputation for bringing the best arts&entertainment to Kitsap
County. Often cited for its excellent and uncommon dinner-theatre,The
Admiral hosts concerts, comedy, dance, stage and musical theatre, including
everything from rock'n' roll to the classical music performances.
A Venue for the Community. The Admiral Theatre makes its theatre, ticket
sales, and promotional capabilities available to community members who
may host an event of their own. In recent years these organizations and
others have utilized the theatre for their own purposes: Hospice of Kitsap
County,The Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce,The Kiwanis Club,The
Kitsap Sun, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Kitsap Opera,The Navy Hospital,
Watson Furniture, Olympic College, Newlife Church, and many more.
A Place for the Community. There are few places in Kitsap County where
1,000 community members can gather in one place. The Admiral Theatre
creates a focal point for people to come together, have a great time, enjoy
each other's company, and take in a first-rate performance. This past year
The Admiral had more than 51,000 people go through its doors for all of its
events.
The Arts Give Back. The City's investment in The Admiral Theatre is not just
to provide good entertainment for many people. It also provides an
impressive economic stimulus for the city and county. The Admiral was
recently ranked as one of the leading nonprofit job creators in a The Kitsap
Business Journal article (October 6, 2014), creating 83 jobs with a payroll of
$675,500. The presence of the theatre in the community has created
$2,230,000 in household incomes locally and $328,440 in city and state taxes
this past year.'These figures do not include the many contributions of new
businesses that have come to be in the umbrella of growth created by The
Admiral's presence.
Downtown Bremerton Grows. We have all witnessed the redevelopment of
restaurants, museums, downtown living, and the beautiful waterfront. Much
of this is made possible by the presence of the Admiral Theatre and the
people it draws. The Admiral Theatre has worked hand-in-hand with area
businesses to help promote their growth, give exposure to them through
sponsorships, advertising, and word of mouth.
Promoting the Arts. The Admiral Theatre believes that a strong arts
community in Bremerton and Kitsap County are good for everyone, its own
economic vitality, and increases the cultural offerings. The Admiral feels a
responsibility to give back. We have worked to help advocate the work of
other arts organizations through mutual marketing efforts, community
groups and associations, and through financial consultations to pass on what
we have learned from our experience.
Capital Campaign and the Future. The Admiral Theatre has embarked on a
major$1.2-million capital campaign to culminate in 2017 for its 75th
anniversary. This capital campaign will allow for investment in infrastructure
and equipment to keep the theatre viable for the next 25 years.
