"By that time, they're on their way to Silverdale," Lent said. There's a growing clamor among Bremerton leaders that the city needs better signs to help visitors find their way to Bremerton's landmarks and districts. While some older draws like the USS Turner Joy on the waterfront have dated signage around town, newer ones, like the Harborside Fountain Park, have little in the way of promotion on city streets. A"wayfinding" network of signs for both motorists and pedestrians could boost visits here, said Wyn Birkenthal, Bremerton's Parks and Recreation director. Birkenthal, along with Mike Strube, Bremerton Chamber of Commerce CEO, presented a plan recently to the city's lodging tax advisory committee that asked for funds to hire a consultant to develop a plan for signs in Bremerton. The committee denied the request"but recognized that establishing consistency in signage and visibility of attractions to tourists would have an incredible impact on tourism and bring together the various City districts," it said in a final report. The denial has not deterred Lent and several City Council members from pursing the effort through other means. Lent, in particular, says she's carved out about $15,000 as a start. In particular, she would like to address the ferry tunnel issue first, providing signs for motorists that tells them they can take a right on Park Avenue that will put them on a path downtown. "I'm going to work as hard as I can on this," Lent said. Former U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, who helped bring the $54 million tunnel to Bremerton, said in a July interview he's all for increased signs and will help out any way he can. "If they need signage, let's figure out a way to do it,"he said. Bremerton does have a limited number of signs, installed about eight years ago, that point out some downtown attractions. But what about signs that promote Manette, or the Charlston District, or the bridge-to-bridge trail that goes between the Warren Avenue and Manette spans? 2 Birkenthal said one possibility going forward is to simply build upon what already exists, duplicating the style of those signs elsewhere in the city. Councilman Jerry McDonald, who ran on a platform of increasing tourism in the city, is a big believer in wayfinding signs. He wants to make sure the city's marketing and branding efforts line up with its wayfinding ones. "I think we need some professional help," in the endeavor, he said. But how could the city ensure the signs are effective? Birkenthal said in his research, the signs work well in creating side trips. Most times, people have an initial destination, he said. But the signs can be most beneficial for those "secondary" and"tertiary" destinations people go to on a whim. He uses a person attending an event at the Kitsap Conference Center as an example. Might they be drawn to tour the Turner Joy or peruse the downtown fountain park, if signs showed them the way? Good wayfinding signs also can direct visitors in a way that shows off the city's finest parts. Birkenthal points to the drive or walk along Pacific Avenue from the ferry terminal to Evergreen-Rotary Park and the 9/11 memorial. In the past few years, the entire stretch of road has been beautified and rebuilt. Birkenthal said he found several cities that drastically increased their tourism and visitor counts by just having good signage. Budgets are tight as city leaders prepare their own for 2015,but"having a carefully delineated plan that you can build on is worth the investment," Birkenthal said. 3
