A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of
Bremerton, Washington, changing the name of 7th Street Between
Warren Avenue and Pacific Avenue to Dr ML King Way.
WHEREAS, a group of Citizens have requested that the City change the name of
a street in the downtown area to honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and
WHEREAS, the Citizens group has requested 7th Street between Warren Avenue
and Pacific Avenue be renamed, and
WHEREAS, staff coordinated with CENCOM on the street naming and
concluded that Dr ML King Way was an approved name, and
WHEREAS, formal letters were sent out to all owners and residents on 7th Street
between Warren Avenue and Pacific Avenue that would be affected by the name change initially
in August, 2013, and again in August, 2014, and
WHEREAS, public meetings were held in the City Council Chambers on
September 3, 2013, and again on August 28, 2014 to discuss the proposed name change, and
WHEREAS, in 2013 the City received letters and comment forms from well over
100 individuals supporting the name change, and again since August 1, 2014 the City has
received well over an additional 100 letters and comment forms from individuals supporting the
name change, NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BREMERTON, WASHINGTON,
DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Name Change. The name of the city street 7th Street from Warren
Avenue to Pacific Avenue is hereby changed to Dr ML King Way.
SECTION Z Severability. If anyone or more sections, subsections, or
sentences of this Resolution are held to be unconstitutional or invalid, such decision shall not
affect the validity of the remaining portion of this Resolution and the same shall remain in full
force and effect.
SECTION 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall take effect and be in force
immediately upon its passage.
