SUMMARY: The Bremerton Municipal Court applied to the Office of Public Defense for a grant and
was awarded $15,000 00 for the proposed public defense improvement project $7,500 00 was
received and accepted by council on February 1, 2012, item 5E The status of the balance of
$7,500 00 was unknown until the state passed its supplemental budget On May 15, 2012, the
balance of $7,500 was received by the court
This money is intended to be used for improvements including increased use of interpreters for
attorney /client meetings, investigators, and an increase in the number of appeals filed The court
also continues with the practices implemented with 2011 funds which provided for a public defender
at first appearance hearings and a public defender at the fail for video hearings
ATTACHMENTS: Letter of Acknowledgement
FISCAL IMPACTS (Include Budgeted Amount) The OPD funding is a revenue source for
$15,000 00 to be used directly for Public Defense in the City of Bremerton Municipal Court These
monies will be fully expended as part of the 2012 Public Defense Contract There are no matching
funds needed
