4. Describe the Scope of Services your organization wili provide to the City of Bemerton.
The primary service we provide to the City of Bremerton is a unique historical, naval
heritage tourist attraction to the Harborside district. In addition to being a museum, the
ship serves as the north breakwater to the Port of Bremerton marina. The USS Tumer
Joy collaborates with all naval groups, events and holidays to celebrate and honor
Bremerton's navat heritage. In addition, the USS Tumer Joy strives to expand historical
education through its museum displays, school tours and ovemight programs. Lastly, it
seeks to expand the community's economic development by being a destination draw for
tourism.
For the past several years, until 2008, we have been dependent upon our website:
(www. ussturneriov orq) and our promotional video on YouTube:
www.www.voutube com/watchv=RsnHDOtwMMI&feature-related) to advertise visitors
to our AAuseum Ship. We leamed that while the website and the promotional video are
effecttive in creating an interest in visiting the ship, not all prospedive tourists are wel
sawy, or have intemet connectivity, particulaly while on vacation.
This curre►rt year, we were awarded 2ppg odging Tax funds, which we used to reprint
and distribute radc-card brochures through the contrad agerrt, Certfied Folder Display.
Rack-card brochures are distributed to areas frequented by tourists. To date, our tourist
counts for the 2009 season have increased dramatically.
A primary supporter of naval museum and naval destroyers in paticular, the Tin Can
Sailor group, ceased grant funding outside of their organization in 2008 due to the
decline of donations writh the passing of a large number World War II veterans. The loss
of the Tin Can Sailor grant has decreased our maintenance budget by $20,000 per year.
This shortfall has required BHSA to adjust its operating budget accordingly. We
consequerrtly rely even more heavily on the Lodging Tax Grant as our primary source of
advertising and promotion funding.
For the year 2010, we wish to reprint sufficient quantities of our rack-card brochures and
contract distribution, as well as, expand our marketing efforts for recumng annual events
such as Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Blackbeny Festival and a
recent added annual event that is quickly becoming a Puget Sound Halloween
destination event, the Halloween Haunted Ship. We also hope to purchase a Point-of-
Sale software/hardware system that will allow us to improve our intemal controls and
collection of data pertaining to visitor counts, tourism and gift shop sales.
2009 LODGING TAX APPUCATION
We recognize that in order to bring more tourists to the USS TURNER JOY, we must
first get them to Bremerton. What is good for the ship is good for Bremerton.
