FIRE ALARM GUIDELINES FOR EXISTING R-l OCCUPANCIES
The Citv of Bremerton
The following guidelines have been established by the City of Bremerton. These guidelines were
developed with the understanding that unique conditions in buildings may require special consideration
by the authority having jurisdiction.
Single-station smoke detectors: Level I, II and III buildings require listed, photoelectric detection
devices inside all sleeping areas. Detection devices shall sense visible or invisible particles of
combustion. .
Manual fire alarm pull stations: Listed manual fire alarm pull stations are required in Level II and
Level III buildings. At least one manual pull station needs to be provided in each stairwell and is to be
located at the common egress level from the building. Concurrent with the stairwell requirement, there is
to be a manual fire alarm pull station located not more than one hundred and fifty (150) feet of actual
travel distance from any apartment door front.
Heat detectors: Listed heat detectors are required in all Level ill apartment buildings. The recommended
location of the heat detector is near the kitchen, or in the hallway near the bedrooms, however an alternate
area may be used when approved by the authority having jurisdiction. The heat detector is to be system-
compatible and shall be of a fixed-temperature type with a 1350p temperature rating. Exception: No heat
detector is required in buildings that are protected throughout by an automatic fire sprinkler system,
which is designed in accordance with NFP A 13 or NFP A 13-R.
Alarm Indicating Devices: Listed audible and visual alarm devices are required for Level II and Level
III buildings. A strobe device, listed for outdoor use, with a 110 candela output shall be located on the
street side of the building in the immediate location of the building address numbers. Audible devices
shall be provided and located such that audibility of the alarm signal shall meet NFP A standards. As this
is a performance-based standard for design, it shall be incumbent upon the fire alarm system contractor to
use calibrated sound measurement equipment to verify that these requirements meet NPP A standards.
Audibility: The authority having jurisdiction shall approve Audibility for the alarm system( s).
Zoning Arrangement: The authority having jurisdiction will determine Zoning of the alarm system(s).
Monitoring: Level II & III buildings will require active monitoring by a D.L.listed central monitoring
station. Level I buildings in Bremerton, requiring an alarm system shall also be monitored. (See Alarm
Code) At least one owner-provided telephone line shall be connected to a digital alarm communicator
transmitter (DACT) when such equipment is used.
Standby battery calculations: Fire alarm systems in Level II and Level ill buildings shall have standby
battery capacity provided which is capable of operating the system in normal mode for 24 hours and, at
the end ofthat period, is capable of operating all alarm notification appliances used for evacuation or to
direct aid to the location of an emergency for 5 minutes.
Fire Alarm Control Panel location: The fire alarm control panel location shall be determined by the
authority having jurisdiction.
Washington State Dept. of Labor and Industries- Electrical Permit: These special guidelines and the
local ordinance do not exempt the fire alarm system installer from the requirement to obtain a valid permit
from the Electrical Inspection Division of the State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries or,
where applicable, from a municipality's Electrical Inspection department. The fire alarm installer shall be
responsible for obtaining all inspections and approvals from L & I at # 360-415-4000

'" '.' . SpectrAlert selectable output wall-mount horns, strobes, and horn/strobes
offer key performance features long associated with the Specu'Alert name. The select-
able candela strobes and horn/strobes offer average current draws that are not only
lower than conventional fixed-candela SpectrAlert products, but also lower than similar
selectable candela products. By consuming less current, the ability to connect even more
devices per loop is possible, resulting in a lower installed cost.
. SpectrAlert selectable output horns, strobes, and horn/strobes offer the
same installation-friendly features synonymous with the SpectrAlert name, such as tbe
option of 2- and 4-wire operation; the ability to use standard size backboxes with no
encroachment into the box; and universal mounting incorporating the labor-saving
QuickClick'" feature. Such labor-savings features make wire connections simple and fast,
further reducing installed cost.
SpectrAlert selectable output strobes and horn/strobes offer the broadest
range of candela options. In addition, the selectable output strobes and horn/strobes
can operate on either 12V or 24 V, with no setting required; the device recognizes and
self-adjusts to the correct current automatically. Temporal 3 or Continuous tone options
continue to be available, in either an ElectroJlle..i1anical or 3kHz pattern.
.: SpectrAlert selectable output horns, strobes, and horn/strobes incorporate
the same stylish, low profile design of the conventional SpectrAJert products, for a .con-
sistent and aesthetically pleasing appe-,uance across the entire product line.

Heat Detectors
Series 600
The Heat Detectors Series 600 are supplied
with the following standard features:
. Rate~of-Rise and Fixed Temperature
. One or Two-Circuit, Normally Open
. Easy Installation
. Low Profile
. Visual Indication
. Operation Testing
The Series 600 Heat Detector is attractive, durable and
features combination rate-of-rise and fixed temperature
operation. Heat detectors are available in 1350F and 2000F
temperature ratings.
Rate-of-rise detects heat by quickly responding to a rapid
temperature increase. Rate-of-rise units have a wide spacing
allowance ot 50-foot centers. See specification table for
details.
Fixed temperature reacts to heat by responding to a specific
temperature setting.
Series 600 Detectors use the same reliable pneumatic rate-of-
rise element of former models, but offer added aesthetic
appeal.
The pneumatic rate-of-rise element responds to a rapid rise in
temperature, approximately 15cF. (80C) per minute, by
expansion of air within the sealed chamber faster than it can
escape through a calibrated vent. The resultaht increase in
pressure depresses the diaphragm, causing the electrical
contact to close the circuit.
The fixed temperature element uses a fusible alloy. When
activated, the external heat collector drops away to provide
quick visual confirmation that the element has operated.
The units protrude only 1-3/8 inch from the ceiling surface with
a junction box mounting. They have pleasing contours and an
all-white finish that conforms to ceiling aesthetics.
Installation
Each detector includes a patented reversible mounting plate.
In one position, it easily attaches to 4" square junction box,
3.25" or 4" octagonal box, or plaster ring.
In reverse, the plate can be used for open wiring without a
junction box. A 1/4" space between detector and mounting
surface allows for wire connections. All mounting screws are
concealed.
The detector attaches easily to the mounting plate with a push
and twist motion. No tools are required.

Mounting plate is molded of white self-extinguishing thermo-
plastic rated at 221 OF (10soe). The plate is extremely strong
yet adapts to uneven mounting surfaces.
Series 600 Testing Methods
Models 601/621 and 602/622 can be tested by the quick
application of heat from any convenient source. A portable hair
dryer is recommended. However, do not apply heat that
exceeds the fixed temperature rating of the detector.
Models 603/623 and 604/624 cannot be tested. However, the
fusible alloy element used is considered so reliable that testing
is not necessary.
