RE: Modular Retaining Wall \.:.; I,JUj-J2 ;j \;}(lJ ':~1
603 Chester Ave, Bremerton, WA '\, __~j'
At your request I reviewed this site to determine the su bility of the epjsfing modular
retaining wall at this property. You reported that the existin-g,r:u;I+ti6fls was a exposed bank
with blackberries and other vegetation prior to the construction of the modular wall. I had
driven by the site often over the years and recall a vegetated bank. Observations of the
exposed bank at the east end of the site indicate that the bank face is cut into native soils
which are gravelly sandy loam. Portions of this bank have been exposed for months with no
apparent instability. No cemented till was noted in the cut. The Soil Survey of Kitsap County
indicates that the Alderwood sandy loam would be expected to be present. This material has
a reasonably high angle of internal friction and when cemented can be stable up to a near
vertical angle. For the calculations we used an internal friction angle of 35, which is typical
for GM loams and gravels as well as the drainage gravel used behind the wall.
The calculations found that the Manorstone wall with a 12" thickness provides a 1.9 factor of
safety on overturning and a 1.53 factor of safety on sliding with a retained height of 4'-6".
Your drawing provided to me of the plan and elevation indicates that the lower wall is typically
3' or less in height and the upper wall is between 4'-6" and 5'-6" in height. For these
calculations the difference in grade is the important height. Wall projection above grade at
the top and bury of the base of the wall ,need not be counted. Where the retained depth
exceeds 4'-6" it is our recommendation that the lower wall height be increased sufficient to
reduce the upper wall retained height. The ground slope of the mid step should be based on
a 1V:6H grade. .
Review of the influence lines on the section finds that the building foundation is outside of the
influence line so it does not impose any surcharge on the wall. The portion of the building
closest to the wall is a relatively light section with only a 6' roof and floor span supported so it
is less than 500 PLF line load. Also, the influence lines indicate that the separation between
walls is sufficient that the upper wall does not load the lower wall. Once the retained heights
are reduced to 4'-6" the subject wall meets the IBC03 and good engineering practice. If
there are any questions, please feel free to call. .' , sf ( ,,"-
