Provide for weed control with chemical retardants or a polyethylene sheet covered with rocks or gravel. The house itself, where the new deck is attached, should be in sound condition. Repair any damaged sid- ing and paint any new wood. Layout and Footings The side of the house provides an easy control line for laying out the deck. When you excavate for the footings and are digging near the foundation, be careful not to disturb plumbing lines, drain tiles, or other utility lines. Plan the placement of the piers so their outside edge is flush with the outside edge of the beam. This way you can conceal them more easily using a fascia board or plant- ings. If the beam will be resting di- rectly on the piers, level all the piers to each other. Ledger, Beam, and Joists The ledger should be3-by lumber if it is available; otherwise, use 2-by that is one size larger than the joists. To attach the ledger to the house, mea- sure 21h inches down from the floor level and draw a level line along the siding of the house, using a long level or a straightedge and short level. This mark represents the top of the ledger. It allows for a I-inch drop from floor level to the top of the deck boards. This drop prevents water or melting snow from backing Lip into the house. Bolt the ledger to the floor framing of the house, using zinc-coated lag bolts or carriage bolts. See page 45 for specific bolting techniques. Install the beams and joists as de- scribed on page 33. At the point where the two beams intersect over one pier, use a miter joint. Where the end of one beam abuts the house, attach it to the house with a wide joist , I hanger or provide a footing and pier. 44 Decking and Fascia The deck boards for this engawa are 2 by 6s, but wider ones may be used. When installing deck boards that are 2 by 6 or wider, take the following precautions to minimize cupping. First, lay the boards bark side up. Second, use three nails at each joist, setting the outside two at opposite angles. Finally, as insurance, you may want to cut saw kerfs up the middle of the bottom of each board before in- stalling it to minimize cupping. Make the cuts lh inch deep (maximum) along the entire length of the board. For a cleaner profile, install a 2 by 8 fascia board flush with the top of. the decking. However, since no ends are visible, you may leave the deck- ing without a fascia. At the corner where the deck changes direction, use a miter joint, or you can run the decking boards along one of the walls all the way out to the edge of the intersecting section of deck. The deck boards of the other . deck arm would then butt against the first board of the original layout. Such a corner would not require a diag- onal joist. ~. ~l.. tt ; ,.
