WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of this body that
there has been called for hearing, commencing April 19, 1965,
before the Agent of Department of Agriculture, a proposal to include
Kitsap and Mason Counties within the area of the Puget Sound Market-
ing Area, this being Docket No. A0-226-All; and
WHEREAS, being advised of the effect of this change, which
will result in the disbursement from the dairy farmers in these
counties of approximately $100,000.00 a year;
NOW, THEREFORE, this body does herewith declare its attitude
and position in relation thereto, and states certain facts concerning
this area, which are pertinent to this inquiry.
The dairying industry and production of dairy products
within Kitsap and Mason Counties form a significant segment of the
local economy.
A chronic economic problem exists in Kitsap and Mason
Counties, arising from the necessity of shipping into these counties
by far the greater proportion of consumer goods used here. A
continuing policy and program of urging and fostering local produc-
Tion and purchase of local goods has for many years been necessary,
and will continue necessary in the future.
Dairying and production of milk products locally is one of
the few areas of economic activity which Puns counter to the general
trend in 'the local economic picture.
Agriculture in Kitsap and Mason Counties is a difficult
occupation, and particularly in the dairying field. The arable land
forms a very small percentage of the county areas, and that which
is available consists of scattered small areas of arable ground,
difficult to farm, import of feeds, hay, machinery, equipment and
servicing thereof, all necessitating increased costs of production
locally, to the point that the profit margin is small.
The increased financial burden that would be imposed by
bringing these counties within the Milk Marketing Order would
aggravate the local farmers condition, and in a large number of
cases make his operation no longer productive, causing substantial
reduction or elimination of one of the few areas of economic benefit
in these counties.
BE AND IT IS NOW, THEREFORE, RESOLVED, that this body
believing the extension of the Milk Marketing Order to Kitsap and
Mason Counties would be detrimental to the-economy of said counties
and the cities therein located, opposition to the proposal and to
the inclusion of these counties within the Federal Milk Marketing
Order is strongly voiced.
