A RESOLUTION urging the Washington State Legislature to take the necessary
steps to build the second Tacoma Narrows Bridge, including the appropriate legal
and financial structures.
WHEREAS, for a number of years Bremerton has been diversifying and revitalizing its
economy; and
WHEREAS, a key component is a viable transportation system; and
WHEREAS, Bremerton has been working on improving its transportation system; and
WHEREAS, Kitsap County is one of the fastest growing counties in the State; and
WHEREAS, Kitsap County has one of the lowest household incomes in the State; and
WHEREAS, viable economic development requires on-time movement of goods and
people; and
WHEREAS, in order to develop a viable community and economy and participate in the
Puget Sound Regional economy, Kitsap County must gain parity access to the Puget Sound
Region; and
WHEREAS, freight mobility to the I-5 corridor is a vital economic link for Kitsap
County; and
WHEREAS, continuous, safe and efficient travel across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is
necessary for economic development; and
WHEREAS, the Washington State Legislature has committed $650 million to complete
SR 16 corridor improvements from the Bridge to 1-5 over the next six years; and
WHEREAS, the Bridge design includes three additional lanes for moving goods and
people, and provision for future construction of light rail on the same infrastructure;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF BREMERTON THAT:
The Washington State Legislature be urged to take the necessary steps to build the second
Tacoma Narrows Bridge, including establishing the appropriate legal and financial structures.
