MOSELY JIM ADRIAN CLYDE PACHEK ART ANDERSON PHIL DROUIN SPENCER HORNING RUSS JOHNSON MORRIE DAWKINS, Mayor ATTEST: KATHLEEN L. MCCLUSKEY City Clerk It is the position of the Bremerton Redevelopment Committee that a fishing pier located on the downtown waterfront would make an invaluable contribution to the development of the waterfront and the betterment of the City as a whole, for the following reasons: 1. It will add significantly to public access to the water. 2. It will contribute visually to theLconnection of the City to its waterfront. 3. Fishing activities add to the interest of the waterfront. An active waterfront is the key to success. A walkway between many diverse activities will be only part of the waterfront appeal. In order to seek the aid and cooperation of the State Department of Fisheries, it is the suggestion of the Bremerton Redevelopment Committee that the Bremerton City Council and the Mayor immediately send a letter to Bill Wilkerson, Director of Fisheries Department, reaffirming the City's desire for a fishing pier in our downtown area and asking the Department to make this an item of highest priority for funding in the next biennium. FISHING PIER.HISTORY 1. A pier has always been recommended in previous waterfront development studies, including the Downtown Waterfront Redevelopmerit Plan of 1981. 2. Department of Fisheries biologists have been studying the possible locations of a pier in the Bremerton downtown area for several years and have accumulated data on depths, bottoms, fish life, etc., to develop maximum fishing potential. 3. The Bremerton pier was proposed four years ago, but was not a highest priority item and was shelved. This fact may make it easier for us to attain high priority for the next biennium. 4. The fishing piers recently built (Tacoma, Edmonds, Seattle) are highly successful and their 24 hour-a-day use does attest to the fact that they meet a real public need. 5. The bait shop that Fisheries requests be located near the site, and food and other services may be leased to a private operator and that revenue used for maintenance and operation. 6. The pier can be located so it will not interfere with other developments on the water, i.e. transit marina, floating historical attractions, and would truly enhance any on-shore development, such as walkways, parks and museums.
