YEADON, SR., CITY CLERK The City of Bremerton wishes to con~nen~ the 18th United States Naval Reserve Batallion, Unit 13-18 Bremerton, of the Seabees, under Commanding Officer Harry Sweigert, for their outstanding effort in preparing the site for the new Community Theatre Building. Whenit became apparent that the construction of the Community Theatre Building could not begin until this ground preparation was accomplished, this group of men were contacted and they responded quickly and energetically to the need, thus saving more delays and thousands of dollars to this community betterment project. Individually we wish to commend besides Commanding Officer Swiegert, Chief Petty OfficerAlbert Stepper, Pat Brown, L. R. LaPorte, E. R. Smith, John Ball, Virgil Rank, Skip Biasberg, Jack Fi~.rud, Carry Wooten, Carl Weick ~.d Don Goodwin. We also wish to commend and thank Lt. Winn and Commander Willisms of Bangor for supplying equipment, and Chief Petty Officer S. M. Hughes from Battallion Headquarters at Sand Point. The job these men undertook was to dig out the foundation area of the theatre building, replacing the earth again and compacting it. This was necessary when a soils engineer found the site consisted of both solid ground and fill dirt. The building could not be safely built until all the underlying ground was evenly distributed and compacted. The Seabees began work on August 23 and completed the job on September 8, 1975. It took 310 man hours and 8,000 cubic yards of earth was removed. It was then replaced in layers, compsct~ng after each layer, until 9,000 cubic yards had been replaced. Equipment used was a TD-20 dozer, a John Dears fron, loader, and a vibrating roller with sheepafoot. We were especially impressed with the professional manner with which these men worked, completing the Job a week ahead of their proposed schedule. These men should be commended both for their dedication and professionalism as members of their reseA-~e unit, and for their committment to their community.
