WHEREAS, the proposed tuition increase is not in the spirit of the open door policy advanced by the Conmaunity College Act of 1967, and WHEREAS, state benefits and wages will not increase enough to cover increased tuition and federal benefits and wages will not increase at all, and WHEREAS, students already pay for schools though sales and property taxes and increased tuition would amount to double taxation, and WHEREAS, most students are on fixed incomes and increased tuition would not allow them to continue their schooling, prematurely forcing them into the already limited and recessed job market in Bremerton and Kitsap County, and WHEREAS, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard workers working full-time would be harder put to make ends meet while attending Olympic College as part-time or even full-time students, and WHEREAS, Bremerton's veteran population, being on fixed incomes, would suffer greatly to get the education they're entitled to under the G.I. Bill, and WHEREAS, the inflation being experienced by the state is also affecting students; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF CITY OF BREMERTON that the Bremerton City Council is opposed to any increased tuition for the state's conmunity colleges for those students who cannot afford such increases.
