SUMMARY: The Police Department needs to increase its first line supervisory staff by adding one sergeant
position to the Operations Division. There are seven budgeted, staffed and authorized police sergeant positions in
the Department. There are 50 authorized police officer positions in the Department. There are a total of 63
authorized and budgeted conunissioned officer positions in the Department. Re-assigning or classifying one police
officer position to the requested sergeant assignment changes the numbers (reduces) from 50 to 49 police officer
positions; and changes (increases) seven sergeant assigmnents to eight assignments. The total force number of 63
remains the same (no changes). Increasing the supervisory staff and assignment level by one police sergeant
position will minimize the need for staffing supervisory ranks with officers-in-charge (OICs). This sergeant will be
assigned to Patrol and traffic functions of the Operations Division. This sergeant's responsibilities will include
duties as a dayshift relief sergeant because currently there is only one dayshift sergeant, and also traffic sergeant
duties and special events.
ATTACHMENTS: Staffing Authorizations 2006
FISCAL IMP ACTS (Include Budgeted Amount): There will be no budgetary impact. The Department will make
this staffing upgrade with in the current budgetary and staffing authorizations. The Department has had vacant
positions that will cover the salarylbenefit costs (Approximately $4,000.00) through the remainder of 2006.
