PD"BLIC RECOGNITION
Chief Metgs spoke regarding the petition to put the Fire Department in the
ambulance business. He does not have bad feelings about going into the
ambulance business but he felt that bad information about the costs of such an
operation had been given. Chief Melts explained our class three fire insurance
rating and how it is affected by personnel. The paramedics program was taken
on vithout an increase in personnel, and that the Department cannot operate
with less personnel then it has now. We could not respond to needs of the
citizens for fire calls if we did not have additional manpower. The minimum
number of personnel we would need for emergency transport only (not routine
transport) would be six personnel and buF a new ambulance. We do not meet
State requirements for ambulance operations with what we have now. The start
up costs alone would be approxmiatelv S160,000. We cannot operate with one
vehicle. The average time for one aid call is 20 minutes and a critical case
is an hour. Discussion followed regarding charging for paremedic service.
Chief Meigs stated that the best paramedic programs in the State do not charge.
Con~,issioner Stewart and Chief Melts discussed Commissioner Stewart's contention
