Subject: Cuckler Steel Panels for use as roof and wall dia- phragms. II. Description: Cuckler steel panels are cold formed sheets using No. 26 gauge steel conforming to ASTM A446, Grade A. The panel cross sectional dimensions and section properties are shown in Figure No.1. The panels are fastened to the framing and to each other with No. 12 self-drilling TEKS screws, I-inch long, f.-inch thread diam- eter and i.-inch head diameter with self-sealing lh-inch diameter neoprene washers. Screws are spaced at 6 inches on center at panel ends and 12 inches on center at intermediate supports. Seam fas- tener spacing is varied with a maximum spacing of one-third of the span between supporting girts of purlins. Cuckler panels fastened as described above shan have an allow- able shear value in pounds per foot equal to (297 - 6.275), where S is the spacing of the seam fasteners in inches. The effective shear modulus (G') in kips per inch shall be equal to (62 - 1.675) (7.08 - L) - 9 , where L is the span in feet between supporting members such as girts or purlins and S is spacing of seam fasteners in inches. The value of the flexibility factor (F), which ~ the average deflection in micro inches of the diaphragm web per foot of span stressed with a shear of one pound per foot, shall be lOOO/G'. The values for these factors for the more common vari- ables are given in Tables Nos. I, II and III. III. Evidence Submitted: Descriptive information, a report on diaphragm load tests and calculations are submitted. Recomendation IV. Recommendation: That the Cuckler Steel Panels are an alternate type of construction to that specified in the Uniform Building Code subject to the following provisions: 1. Allowable diaphragm shear loads do not exceed the values set forth in this report. No increase is permitted for short time loading due to wind or seismic forces. 2. The calculated deflection of the diaphragm for masonry or concrete walls is determined as set forth in U. S. Govern- ment Tri-Service Manual TM5.809-10, titled "Seismic De- sign of Buildings." 3. The deflection of the diaphragm in masonry or concrete wall bnildings does not exceed a value determined by the follow- ing formula: 6= H2f .OlEwT Do = Allowable deflection of diaphragm in inches.
