JANUARY 6, 7, 2002 STORM ISSUES
City crews worked from Sunday morning until approximately ! 0:30 pm Monday evening
fighting storm conditions throughout the City. Record-breaking rainfall totaled nearly 6.5
inches for three days with approximately 4 inches Sunday night and Monday. Significant
issues include:
· East Bremerton Beach Main - Our sewer beach main between Lions Field and the
Port Washington Channel crossing is plugged. Flows are being directed to the
Eastside CSO treatment plant. Alternatives for cleaning the line are being
reviewed at this time.
· Price Road - Water overtopped the road at the 24-inch culvert crossing and
washed the shoulder resulting in closure of Price Road. We will need to make
shoulder repairs and may need to put in a supplemental pipe to provide greater
capacity.
· Patton Avenue Slide - A slide caused closure of Patton Avenue, and the eroded
bank is threatening a vacant residential structure at 218 South Summit. The City is
attempting to locate and notify the owner of the property. Debris is being cleaned
up. The street will be reopened later this week assuming the slope is stabilized.
· 17th Street Sink Hole - A sink hole was discovered in 17th Street between Ohio
and High when the roadway collapsed under one wheel of a Rabanco garbage
truck. The truck was removed and temporary repairs were made.
· Chico Bridge Water Main Failure - High water took out the water main at the
County's Chico Creek Bridge. Water distribution is being rerouted and
alternatives for temporary repairs are being reviewed.
· Wemer Road Water Main - The water main on section of Werner Road under
construction was threatened by erosion but did not fail. Ace Paving is responsible
for maintenance of this area. City staff are coordinating these repairs.
· Casad Darn - Fortunately, Casad Dam did not overtop, although water came to
the top of the structure. We have approximately one foot of freeboard this
morning.
· Gorst Creek - Our Forestry crew fought into the night pulling large debris out of
Gorst Creek allowing water to flow at the Old Belfair Road culvert crossing at
Gorst. Water peaked Monday Evening at approximately 9:30 pm without
overtopping the road. Without this effort, the road would have been lost.
Significant damage occurred on the recently completed Gorst Creek Remediation
Project.
